A Spark of the Divine

I'll be honest.

In light of all the hurt in the world, in the midst of scary words like ISIS, of devastated refugee families, of hunger close to home... it seems a little silly, this home remodel project of ours.

I mean, in the face of eternity, does pulling up carpets really matter?

Does painting walls mean anything?

Why are we really doing this, anyway? And who cares?

I've wrestled with some of these questions lately. It's amazing what a little quiet will bring about. For me, it was hard questions.

Wanting our homes to be beautiful, restful, and welcoming- where does that come from, anyway?

The strong drive within me to take this little house and restore it back to the way it once was, back to it's former glory, if you will- where do I get that?

For a girl who has never been described as "handy," I find myself truly treasuring the long hours of scraping carpet glue off of hardwood floors. I love the idea that I'm part of bringing them back, of restoring them, of finding old wooden planks and making them beautiful again.

I think there's a spark of the divine in that desire.

We're made in the image of the Creator. Of the Restorer. The Reclaimer.

He loves to restore us, to find us, to bring us back to our former glory. To make us into something we didn't know we could be. To take my tarnished, my broken, my dirty, and make it beautiful.

It's what He does.

Is it any wonder that there are so many home restoration magazines out there? That we pour over Pinterest and DIY blogs?

We're just following in the footsteps of our Father, after all.

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”- Revelation 21:5

  2. Good post Ally.
We do not have to give up on everything we are doing daily to make a better environment for our family to mean that we care about all the injustice in the world.
God cares about every single part of our lives as well as all that goes on in the world.
