Praying Over Your Marriage

Can I tell you a little secret?

One that not even my husband knows?

Here it goes: For a year, I prayed for my husband every night.

He thought I was just scratching his back as he fell asleep, but in truth, I was praying, too. Our first year of marriage was covered in prayer.

And then?

Well, things got busy. I started working full time, sometimes longer hours than he was working. I was tired and often overwhelmed, and my prayers for my husband became fewer and further apart.

I think we've all been there.

We start with the best of intentions, the purest of motives, but life gets in the way.

Here's the thing.

I believe in the power of prayer. I think prayer is so important. It's a priority to me. And I want to cover my husband, my marriage, in prayer.

But how to start again?

That's where this book comes in.

Darlene Schlacht writes over at Time-Warp Wife- and I've really enjoyed following her blog for a couple of years now. She's also written several great books, including "The Virtuous Life of a Christ-Centered Wife" (great, by the way).

Her mission is to help couples keep Christ in the center of their marriage- which is a prayer that Trevor and I have had for our marriage before it even began.

100 Prayers for Your Marriage isn't a book just for wives- it's for you as a couple to spend time praying together for your marriage. It's perfect for quiet time together, and is a really great resource to help you pray for your husband and your marriage if you're out of the habit (like I am!), or even if you just need a little more direction in your prayer time.

Let's be couples who pray for one another, pray for our marriages, and strive every day to love like God loves.

Do you pray with your husband or for your husband? How do you make prayer a priority?

  1. My husband and I pray out loud for each other every morning. Some days it's powerful and other days it's rushed as one of us is running out the door. No matter what we do this. I would love to check out this book and get more creative and develop more of a quiet time together.

    1. So great! I love that you make it a priority in your lives!

We don't have a routine of praying for one another right away in the morning, but I think we'll have to start that!

  2. I love this idea. I need to be more intentional about praying for my husband, and I think this would help a lot! We are getting ready to move so he can start seminary in the fall, and I pray that he will have a peace about the move and that he will continue to follow God's plan for our life and be obedient to His call. Thanks for doing this awesome giveaway (and sharing about it in Peony so I knew to head over and check it out)! :)

    1. Sure thing, Maegan! I think that the first few years of our marriage (with all the moving and job changes and stress) were so conflict-free because of the prayers that we offered up (and all the prayers that were said for us by our loved ones!)

    1. Yes- I have read Power of a Praying Wife- so good! I went through that book about a year ago! I really liked how the prayers were based on scripture in that book-- and that's one of the things I love most about this '100 Prayers' book, too! All based on scripture!

That's a good one- and you must have sleepless nights a little more often now with two littles! =)

  7. I pray for my husband's sanity since he stays at home with the girls while I'm at work all day. ;)

(I had written more in my earlier post, but apparently it didn't go through!)

  8. I need to pray for him more other than just for him to find a job. Maybe it would help our marriage.

    1. You know what's funny? I've found that when I pray for my husband, many times, it's my attitude that changes. More often than not, I'm the biggest part of my problems! =)

  9. When my fiance and I split up for about 2 months (two years ago, things were rough), I started going to church again. I felt uplifted and at peace. After we reconciled, I continued to attend and worship, and I always feel more stressful on the weeks where I miss going. I know I should be praying harder at home myself, and maybe a devotional would help direct me better! My fiance has made many rough choices in his past, and we are working hard to leave the past behind us and work for a brighter future.

    1. Making a priority to reconnect with God is so important for me, too. I've found that it does really help me to have a guide to wrangle my thoughts and help me focus!
